Function Point CEO, Chris Wilson, sits down with CIOReview to chat about how Function Point has achieved the level of success that it has, and why the only direction to go from here is up.

CIO: Function Point’s integrated workflow management solution has proven to make agencies more productive and profitable. Could you elaborate on your solution?

Well, what we’re trying to prevent is budget overruns and delays for clients. We do that by offering a SaaS business management tool that gives someone real-time access to key indicators of their business’s performance.

Unlike some of our competitors, we are a complete enterprise resource planning tool that integrates with the most common accounting packages. We also provide a next-generation portal for our clients to interact with their clients, whether it be job requests, client approvals, notes, sharing of proofs, or documents. 

CIO: The name ‘Function Point’ — is there an interesting story behind the coinage of it?

CW: Our creative project management software keeps the functions of an agency on point! [Laughs] When I was studying software engineering at UBC, we were introduced to something called function points, which is a methodology that’s used to assist in defining the size of a software project. There was something that appealed to me about the singular nature of a function point. My focus has always been on building a functional software, and then the concept of a single point where all of your information can be found – the name kind of came organically from that thought process. I was a little hesitant at first, thinking about how popular function points — as an academic study — are. I very quickly got over that!

CIO: What are your philosophies around the way you manage your company/thought leadership?

CW: Owning our company vision and speaking about the vision is something I take very seriously. I would also say that I live all of our company core values: mutual respect — shown through everyone being honest, generous, and showing commitment; a balance in work and life; and the value of growth — the idea that collectively we need to pursue the future of the organization, while individually we need to support each other in what we’re doing on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis.

I speak of these foundational values regularly here, and this comes back again to how we can continue to communicate openly. I’ve already spoken of our daily huddle and our bi-weekly town hall meetings that we do in addition to the monthly and yearly strategic sessions. It’s really all about getting a rhythm in the business going around education, and collectively pursuing both the future of the company and the future of each person who works here.

CIO: What is Function Point’s next big step to advance forward in the industry? What are some of your upcoming product or geographic expansions?

CW: There’s so much opportunity when you think about the fact that literally every organization that’s out there could use a tool like fp. to assist them in improving their utilization, communication, and profitability on work they’re delivering to clients. We’re continually pushing forward with that, and we’re embracing more of the mobile technologies and integration with the other tools. We’re working hard right now to explore new interfaces, such as using wrist technology for input of appropriate data in the fp. system.

I would say what we have is not just a North American opportunity, it’s a world wide opportunity. We’ve identified opportunities in Latin America — our VP of Product is actually visiting Colombia and Ecuador at the moment — and they make a lot of sense for us because our product is capable of supporting different languages and translations. A very important part of our future will be fine tuning how to best support the success of our customers in these different geographical regions.

CIO: Is there anything more you would like to add or highlight? Any other insight you would like to share that we may have missed?

CW: Our product is becoming more and more relevant every day. We’ve been doing this long enough to understand what people are looking for and we’ve had the opportunity to really address that in the product. Unlike a startup that might be trying to learn about challenges their software presents through the feedback from customers, we have a really huge head start in that we have a clear understanding of our creative project management software, and have had the opportunity to really address the needs of our target audience.
